The Muscle Biology Laboratory is dedicated to identifying mechanisms that explain age-related changes to skeletal muscle structure and function with a focus on coordination between these two characteristics. We use this knowledge to test novel interventions that improve rehabilitation outcomes in older adults at risk for physical disability.

Muscle Biology and Human Aging
What are the aspects of cellular function that best predict physical function and independence in older adults at risk for disability? How can we improve rehabilitation outcomes for older adults subjected to bed rest or inpatient treatment?
Quantitative and qualitative changes to skeletal muscle play a role in shaping rehabilitation outcomes following a clinical insult. We are dedicated to improving those outcomes by identifying targets for interventions that will improve muscle health during periods of acute and prolonged disuse.
